Band History

Silver Spade - Rick Yapchanyk, Bob Yapchanyk, Ed Brandt, Mike Keeler
The Silver Spade story started with a local garage band. As guitarist Bob Yaps watched the garage band slowly fall to pieces, he realized that it time to move on. During this time, vocalist Rick Yaps began to make music a more serious part of his life by beginning to write songs of his own. It was only a matter of time before the two brothers began to collaborate and write music together.

Eager to take things to the next level, Bob and Rick talked to Pete Simone, who had the drummer in the garage band, about coming on board. The three began

rehearsing during the summer of 2002 and started gigging in 2003. Needing a bass for these shows, the group called upon good friend and fellow musician, Matt Guarino who agreed to play bass. After a few fun and productive years of playing at bars and clubs in Westchester and New York City, Matt began to pursue his own interests as a guitarist and songwriter. As Matt helped his project get off the ground, he could no longer devote much time to playing bass for Silver Spade (then known as Xiphoid Rose) and peacefully parted ways with the group.

In late 2005, Rick and Bob met Eric Neuman and knew that they had found the bassist they were looking for. Bringing fresh influences and a load of talent, Eric completed the sound of the hard-hitting quartet. About a month after their first rehearsal with Eric, Silver Spade began recording it's debut EP, Slip Away. Over the next nine months, the band spent the bulk of it's time recording, editing, mixing, and mastering their self-produced EP. When the guys weren't in the studio, they were out gigging at more area bars and clubs, most notably CBGBs Gallery (NYC) and Otto's Shrunken Head (NYC).

On November 10, 2006, Silver Spade officially released Slip Away, and for the next few months, the band promoted the new EP by playing shows at New York City clubs such as The Mean Fiddler (NYC) and The Underscore (NYC), at local Westchester clubs such as Barney McNabb’s (Yonkers, NY), and on the stage of The Opus Theater (Nyack, NY).

In March 2007, Pete’s busy schedule forced him to leave Silver Spade for the time being. But it only took Silver Spade a few weeks of auditions to find Mikey Keeler, whose energy, talent and dedication helped push Silver Spade to new heights. In January 2008, Eric decided to part with Silver Spade so he could focus on his own solo project. After about a month of auditions, Silver Spade found their new bassist in Ed Brandt. Ed brings talent, experience, work ethic, and personality that make him a perfect fit the band.

During these years of change, Silver Spade never stopped pushing forward, and played many great shows, including an opening slot for Tramp’s White Lion at The Chance (Poughkeepsie, NY); Crash Mansion (NYC); the annual M.E.A.N.Y. Fest in NYC, where Silver Spade was named a Top 5 vote getter; the annual L.O.M.E. Fest (Peekskill, NY), and the Original Session National Band Search (NYC).

On October 30, 2009, Silver Spade released From the Ashes, which features the fan favorite track, “Red Magic,” and the powerful title track, “From the Ashes.” (From the Ashes and Slip Away can be found by clicking the store link, or through many online retailers, including iTunes and Rhapsody).

In February of 2010, Pete Simone stepped back behind the Silver Spade drum kit when Mikey decided to leave for personal reasons. During this time, the band continued grow its fan base in the New York City area by playing several great gigs, including ones at The Basement, opening for Ronny Munroe of Metal Church (Kingston, NY); Tammany Hall (NYC); and the Ace of Clubs (NYC). The band was also featured on The Real Radio Show on Long Island’s 103.9 WRCN on which they premiered their new song, “Whiskey Dancing.”

After two years, Pete decided to focus his efforts in other areas and the band began auditioning drummers. In July of 2012, Silver Spade found Dave Cohen, whose talent, commitment, experience and personality, assured the band they had found their drummer. Having solidified their most talented lineup to date, Silver Spade continues to propser and expand it's fan base with memorable live performances at their "regular" venues, such as The Chance, and at new venues, including the 2013 New York Warrior Dash (Windham Mountain), Rack N Roll (Stamford, CT), and Snapper Magee's (Kingston, NY).

The band is currently finishing their third studio release, an EP featuring “Whiskey Dancing” and five other hard hitting new songs. The album is currently scheduled for a 2014 release.
